PBS Public TV grant will help pupils to develop math skills

Children will learn math and science while competing in the Soap Box Derby.
WNEO/WEAO-TV, Youngstown/Akron, has won $208,551 to fund an interactive, instructional project to develop science and math skills for fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade pupils.
The Soap Box Derby Math and Science Project is a multimedia curriculum package providing real-life experiences for pupils to develop scientific and mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
Derby Downs: The activities will revolve around Akron's All-American Soap Box Derby. Since 1934, youngsters from around the world have come to Akron's Derby Downs with cars they have built and driven to victory in their home communities.
The Soap Box Derby Math and Science Project will assist students as they prepare for Ohio proficiency and achievement tests. Content for the project will align with Ohio's academic standards for math as well as the state's model mathematics and science curriculums and proficiency outcomes.
Each kit will include video, CD-ROM and web components as well as opportunities for teachers' professional development. The project begins production in January and is expected in classrooms during fall 2002.
The grant is one of two regional awards to public television stations in Ohio. The grants are specifically aimed to assist the state's low-wealth school districts and are free to these districts. Other Ohio school districts may buy the package at a minimal cost.
