BOYS BASKETBALL Testa, Joynes lead McDonald victory
The Blue Devils pulled away from East Palestine with a 25-point fourth quarter.
McDONALD -- Jason Joynes scored 11 of his 20 points in the final quarter Friday as the McDonald High boys basketball team held off East Palestine 61-44 in a non-league.
The Blue Devils led just 36-29 after three quarters, but used a 25-point fourth stanza to put the game away.
Nick Testa had 24 points to lead McDonald, and Kevin Stonestreet had 10 points.
Andrew Burtyk hit for 17 points and eight rebounds while Bret Young had 15 points for the Bulldogs.
Jackson-Milton 75, Leetonia 69: LEETONIA -- Josh Ayers came off the bench to plug a pair of 3-point goals in the fourth quarter, during which Jackson-Milton rallied to a 32-17 scoring advantage for a come-from-behind victory.
Ayers scored eight of his 10 points in the final quarter, while Keith McVey tallied 14 points while Matt Kiraly and Dick Rubenstahl added 12 each for the Bluejays (4-2).
For Leetonia (2-4), Jeremy Hoaglin led the way with 23 points while Drew Mason had 18 and Ryan Dowling 15.
Columbiana 65, Lowellville 62: LOWELLVILLE -- Gerald Grim scored 20 points and Ryan Carletti added 12 more for the Clippers.
Don Packner, Andy Peterson, Mike Palumbo and Autumn Axel scored 16, 14, 13 and 10 points respectively for the Rockets (0-7).
United 71, Western Reserve 58: BERLIN CENTER -- The Golden Eagles (4-2) built a commanding 37-25 lead by intermission.
Jordan Phillips triggered United's balanced attack with 21 points. Davan Peters chipped in with 15 and Rick Schneider finished with 13.
Greg Speece paced the Blue Devils (0-7) with 21 points and Jeremy Shevel added 11.
Sebring 67, Streetsboro 50: STREETSBORO -- Greg VanKirk, a 6-foot-1 junior, scored a career-high 29 points and shot 12-for-13 from the foul line for the Trojans (5-0).
VanKirk was averaging 23 points a game.
Josh Dean and Ed Householder, another pair of juniors, scored 13 and 11 points respectively for the Trojans who made 26 of 31 free throws.
Tom Stockard hit for 13 points for the Rockets (2-4).
Wellsville 80, Southern 46: WELLSVILLE -- Brett Hambleton and Jared Mike scored 24 and 21 points, respectively, to lead the Tigers. Vince Ross netted 18 points and Robbie Lewis had 15.
Brandon Hamilton of Southern (2-3) led all scorers with 26 points.
