Warren man indictedon federal gun charges
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted Jason W. Kirkpatrick, 22, of Niles Road, Warren, on charges of violating a firearms law. The indictment alleges that Kirkpatrick stole four guns from a dealer in Leavittsburg in July and possessed them after being convicted of burglary and receiving stolen property.
Under federal law, theft of firearms from a federal gun dealer and being a felon in possession of firearms are each punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The case was investigated by the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department and U.S. Treasury Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. It is being prosecuted by Nancy L. Kelley, an assistant U.S. attorney.
Elections commissionfinds against candidate
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Elections Commission found Thursday that a Brookfield Township trustee candidate didn't have the proper disclaimers on campaign literature.
A panel of the commission, however, threw out allegations that the candidate, John M. Miller, made false statements against Brookfield Township Trustees Gary P. Lees and John P. Schmidt leading up to last month's elections.
The three had been running for two trustee seats, with Lees and Schmidt winning.
The commission unanimously found good cause that Miller lacked the proper disclaimers on some campaign literature but decided not to refer the matter for prosecution or impose any fines.

Agriculture center
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners gave Murphy Contracting Co. of Youngstown a $909,000 contract to build the Trumbull County Agricultural and Family Education Center. The structure will house offices for the Trumbull County Ohio State University Extension Office, soil and water conservation district and several other agencies that deal with agricultural and conservation issues.
A $192,000 contract for electrical work was awarded to Hotrod Electrical Contracting of Warren.
County commissioners also have approved an additional $500,000 bond issue to fund construction of the building on West Main Street in Cortland.
A $1 million bond issue already had been approved.
Muscular dystrophy fund
LIBERTY -- Eastern Ohio Muscular Dystrophy Association raised $40,000 in donations during a two-day fund drive.
The agency picked up 95 area "jailbirds" Tuesday and Wednesday and took them to the Liberty Township Administration Building, where each had to raise $1,500 "bail" to get released.
Diane Costlow, Youngstown district secretary for the agency, said the $40,000 is twice as much as last year's one-day collection.
