Man charged with shooting neighbor's dog
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township police have charged a 34-year-old West Garfield Road man with shooting and wounding his neighbor's pet Rottweiler.
Kenneth P. Filban pleaded innocent to a charge of injuring animals during a Wednesday arraignment in Mahoning County Court in Canfield, court officials said. He was released on his own recognizance and scheduled to appear for a 6 p.m. Feb. 20 pretrial.
Lt. Rick Martin, Beaver Township police detective, said Filban admitted shooting the dog Dec. 10 with a rifle. Filban told police he shot the animal after it attacked his own pet dog and became aggressive toward him.
Injury: Sandra Messenger said her year-old dog, named Slick, was shot in the back with the bullet exiting at the side of his neck. She said the dog spent hours lying between her house and shrubs before family could find him.
"I think it's pretty sad to take revenge out on a dog," Messenger said. "He suffered. He really suffered a lot."
She said Slick will recover.
