NILES Council OKS raises for nonunion employees

NILES -- Council approved 4.5 percent pay raises this year for nonunion, nonelected city employees.
The new wage rates are effective next year. With the new wages, James Newbrough Jr., light department superintendent, remains the highest-paid city employee earning about $47,112 annually, up from about $45,092 this year.
Casual laborers in the street, light and water departments earn the lowest wage at $6.20 per hour, under the ordinance council passed Wednesday night.
Last year, council members approved wage increases of about 50 cents per hour for nonunion, nonelected employees effective this year. Council members also tentatively set the committees for the 2002 through 2004 term. Official action on the committee appointments will be next month.

UFinance: chairman Robert L. Marino Jr., D-at large; and Stephen G. Papalas, D-at large, and Michael Lastic, D-2nd.
USafety, Health and Welfare: chairman Papalas; and Paul Hogan, D-4th, and Thomas A. Scarnecchia, D-at large.
UUtilities: chairman Frank S. Fuda, D-1st; and Hogan and Reginald F. Giancola, D-3rd.
UImprovements: chairman Giancola; and Fuda and Scarnecchia.
UParks, Buildings and Grounds: chairman Lastic; and Fuda and Marino.
UStreets and Sidewalks: chairman Scarnecchia; and Papalas and Giancola.
UCommunity Development and Annexation: chairman Hogan; and Marino and Lastic.
