BOARDS OF EDUCATION
SOUTHINGTON
U Superintendent Bill Pfahler announced that Southington tied for first in Trumbull County in the percentage of pupils passing the fourth-grade proficiency reading test. Only two Southington pupils did not pass, but they have two more tries, he said.
U Possible dates of May 15 or May 22 were suggested by board member Al Haberstroh for the senior trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., were deemed unsatisfactory. High school principal Dave Wilson said that final tests would be May 21 to 24 and a May 15 trip would interfere with test preparations. Haberstroh noted that 24 students had paid, which is more than half the 44 students in the class. Cost per student is $400. Wilson noted, as he has in previous years, that the point of the senior trip is for all the students to go, but the cost is so high that 20 students aren't going. Possible dates are after Memorial Day (May 27) and before graduation May 31, Wilson said.
U Approved Jim Wolke as head football coach for next year.
U Approved participating in the Ashtabula/Trumbull County Cooperative Purchasing Program for 2002-2003 school year.
U Accepted a $55,246 OhioReads grant to be used for pupils in grades kindergarten through second and for volunteer training.
U Approved the sale of an 11-year-old bus.
