Kent State gets funds for building project

COLUMBUS -- State money will help Kent State University replace ceilings and lighting in a university building and buy an advanced microscope system.
Without comment, the State Controlling Board released $254,655 Monday for the White Hall Corridor Ceiling and Lighting Replacement project and $105,441 to the university's Center for Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials for the microsope.
The ceiling and lighting project involves the removing and replacing of suspended tile corridor ceilings and lighting on all floors of the building, university officials say in documents.
The project also includes the installation of new flooring on the third and fourth floors of the building, according to university officials.
Contractors: The general contractor, Terreri Construction Co of North Jackson, will be responsible for the suspended ceiling grid and ceiling tile work, framing and drywall work, painting and ductwork changes and cleaning the tile walls.
The electrical contractor, Montecalvo Electric of Akron, will be responsible for new wiring, lighting and controls, university officials say.
The carpet contractor, Ryan Carpet Sales & amp; Service of Austintown, will do the new flooring, officials say.
Microscope: Meanwhile, the release of $105,441 to the center includes a waiver of competitive selection for $60,000 to buy a scanning optical microscope system. The rest of the money is expected to be used for other equipment.
The Center for Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials, a consortium of Kent State, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and the University of Akron, is set up to advance the basic science of liquid crystals material.
The ALCOM center also explores the applied technology and commercial development potential of the discoveries that are developed.
