HUBBARD -- A height differential with good people usually makes a difference in basketball. Just ask the Brookfield High girls team.
The Warriors, with nobody taller than 5-7 in their starting lineup, were besieged on the boards by the much taller Eagles in a 63-40 Hubbard victory.
The game was over shortly after it started as Hubbard (4-2, 4-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference) used a 17-0 first-quarter run to take a 19-2 lead. The Warriors (2-3, 1-3) missed all 11 shots they took in the first quarter.
The Eagles also ripped balls off the boards with a 14-4 advantage.
The Eagles' junior duo of 6-foot-2 Katy Jo Mroski and 6-1 Jill Phillips dominated.
Phillips scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds during that stretch.
"We had the size on them which made our rebounding easy as it gave us a lot of shots on the offensive boards," Phillips said.
On the night, Mroski had a team-high 13 points with eight rebounds while Phillips scored 10 points and hauled in 13 of the Eagles' 33 rebounds.
"It was a very physical game which is the way we like to play," Mroski said.
Senior guard Jami Duvall, a 5-8 player, netted 10 points as 10 Eagles scored.
Out front: Junior point guard Anna DeJulio made five assists and five steals,
"We had two nice stretches of play in the first and third quarters when our defense was exceptional," Hubbard coach Dave Konczal said. "Our post players did a great job on the boards and boxing out."
After being held with out a field goal in the first quarter, Brookfield went on a 7-0 run to open the next quarter.
Outscored 21-10 in the third quarter, Brookfield senior point guard Jen Ford got hot from the floor.
After only scoring a field goal in the first half, Ford led all scorers with 18 points.
Brookfield sophomore Kaitlyn Nasci pulled down seven of her team's 19 rebounds.
"We waited too long to play like we are capable of playing," Brookfield coach Tim Filipovich said. "They definitely hurt us on the boards, but we are a young team and Ford finally got us going."
