Angry man claimedto be police officer
CANFIELD -- A 21-year-old Lisbon man and 21-year-old Salem woman told police they were the victims of road rage at the hands of a man claiming to be an off-duty police officer.
According to police reports, the encounter occurred around 6:30 p.m. Saturday as the couple was traveling along East Main Street. The couple told police that when their car came to a stop, the driver of a light-colored sport utility vehicle jumped out and began pounding on the side window, ordering them to put the window down. Once the window was open, the man identified himself as a police officer.
The victims recorded their assailant's license plate number and were able to identify the Portage County man through a Law Enforcement Automated Data System photograph. He is not a police officer in Canfield or Portage County.
Take keys, cops warn
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Police are urging vehicle owners to not leave keys in unlocked vehicles. Three recent car thefts were the result of keys being kept in unlocked vehicles, they said. Police said they recovered all three vehicles on Saturday. Two were found in a wooded area off of Pa. Route 288 in Wayne Township.
The other vehicle was found on Pa. Route 351 in North Sewickely Township, Beaver County. Police said one car was taken from Crescent Avenue on Dec. 11 and the others were taken Saturday from Fountain and Lawrence avenues. Police said no arrests have been made.
Superintendent searchdraws to a close
LEETONIA -- Leetonia Board of Education will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday to hire a schools superintendent. The meeting will be in the Washingtonville Elementary cafeteria. The board may narrow the list at a special meeting at 8:30 tonight.
Finalists are David Bair, Poland Middle School principal; Thomas Davis, principal of Bell-Herron Middle School, Carrollton; Thomas Inchak, Austintown Schools director of instruction; and Jerry Wolf, Waterloo Schools middle school principal, Atwater. Superintendent Lynn King died in September of complications from heart surgery.
Assault charges
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A man accused of holding a knife to a woman's throat and threatening to kill her faces charges of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats, harassment and carrying an offensive weapon. Donald William Brown, 23, of Catalina Drive was arraigned Monday by District Justice Melissa Amodie and released on $5,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for Friday in Amodie's office.
Police arrested Brown Monday after the woman told them Brown walked into her house and threatened her with the knife. The two had been arguing over whether he could stay at the woman's home, police said. Police said Brown was arrested about two blocks from the woman's home and they found eight knives on him.
Threatening call
SHARON, Pa. -- An East State Street man was in jail this morning, charged with threatening to kill people at Sharon Regional Health System.
Police arrested Kyle D. Struver, 43, at his home around 4:30 p.m. Monday on a warrant charging him with making terroristic threats and harrassment by communications. He spent the night in jail and faced arraignment today.
Police said Struver called the hospital around 1:30 a.m. Monday trying to reach a specific employee and then began making threats, saying he would go to the hospital and start shooting people.
Those he talked to recognized his voice, leading to his arrest, police said.
