Alliance BOE votes tonight on MAC bid

ALLIANCE -- The Alliance Board of Education will vote at tonight's meeting whether to accept an invitation to join the Metro Athletic Conference.
Alliance recently withdrew from the Stark County-based Federal League.
If Alliance accepts, Clem Zumpella, MAC Commissioner, said the principals of the MAC schools would meet in January to vote on adding Alliance.
The current MAC schools are Canfield, Howland, Niles, Poland, Salem and Struthers.
If all goes according to plan, Alliance would become a full-fledged member in the 2003-04 school year.
Two years ago, the MAC went down to six teams when Girard withdrew to join the Trumbull Athletic Conference.
Zumpella said Alliance's enrollment of 775 students would put them in the middle of the MAC school's enrollments.
"We're very enthusiastic about this because we believe they will be a good fit with our league," Zumpella said.
Zumpella said the Aviators' athletic programs compete in Division II.
