Victim of shooting dies in surgery
YOUNGSTOWN -- Daniel Harris Jr. died in surgery this morning after being shot at least twice as his car sped through the Party Pantry parking lot at 2732 Glenwood Ave. on the South Side.
Police found Harris, 46, of Wilson Avenue, slumped in his car in the 3000 block of Glenwood, where it had crashed into two cars. The three cars were towed and held for detectives.
A witness who had been driving north on Glenwood about 1:30 a.m. was nearly hit by Harris' car as he turned south onto Glenwood from Canfield Road. The party shop sits at the corner of Glenwood and Canfield Road. The witness called police from the party shop.
Police found several casings in the parking lot. Harris' car had bullet holes in the driver's side rear door and quarter panel, which coincided with two holes in the driver's seat, reports show.
A neighbor told police he heard seven to 10 gunshots then a loud crash but didn't see what happened.
Harris died about 4 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Health Center. His death is the city's 31st homicide of the year.
In 2000, the city recorded 31 homicides, the last of which happened Dec. 18.
