NORTH LIMA Crash kills girl, leaves 2 in serious condition

Counseling will be available Monday for grief-stricken students.
NORTH LIMA -- Counselors were on hand and some activities were canceled at South Range High School after a sophomore was killed Saturday morning when the car in which she was a passenger crashed on Beaver Creek Road in Green Township.
Mandy L. Mihalik, 15, of Salem, was in the front seat of a car driven by 16-year-old Amanda L. Shirey of Canfield.
Shirey and a rear-seat passenger, Rebecca J. Foerster, 15, of Green Township, were in serious condition Saturday evening in the intensive care unit of Akron City Hospital.
Guidance counselors, teachers and pastors assembled Saturday afternoon at the school to speak to grief-stricken students, and counseling will again be available Monday, said high school Principal Dennis Dunham.
A boys basketball game against Springfield Local set for Saturday evening, a girls basketball game against Leetonia set for Monday, and a Christmas concert set for Tuesday at the high school were postponed, said Superintendent James Hall.
What happened: According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Shirey's 1990 Plymouth Acclaim went off the right side of the straight section of road, which had a slight rise near the accident scene, veered back onto the road, and then went off the left side of the road, over an embankment and crashed into a tree just south of state Route 165.
The crash occurred at 12:10 a.m. Neither speed nor alcohol were involved. Mihalik was not wearing a seat belt, the OSHP report said.
