YOUNGSTOWN -- New Hope Academy has received a $7,500 grant from the William Swanston Charitable Foundation. The grant will allow the school to provide scholarships to five pupils. New Hope is a private, independent, Christian elementary school on Youngstown's South Side.

HERSHEY, Pa. -- Douglas R. Hazlett, assistant superintendent of Sharpsville schools, received the supervision and curriculum development award from the Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development during the association's recent annual conference. Hazlett, a graduate of West Middlesex High School, was honored for his leadership in professional activities, programs and projects that have benefited schools and pupils.

YOUNGSTOWN -- City school pupils took 14 of the top 16 honors in the Mahoning County Challenge 24 contest at Youngstown State University. The game requires pupils to combine four numbers using addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division to come up with a total of 24.
In the seventh- and eighth-grade category, Kevin Daley, Mark Kelso and Ashley Koval of Volney Rogers Junior High School placed first, second and third, respectively. In sixth grade, Misti Mraz of Jackson Elementary School placed first, Taylor Daugherty of Kirkmere Elementary School was second and Kristi Mraz of Jackson was third. April Barlo of West Elementary School was first in the fifth-grade contest, followed by Aaron McKinney and Mohammad Musleh, both of West. In fourth grade, Kara Guyer of West placed second and Andrew Rawden of Kirkmere was third.
Environmental awardgoes to SRU professor
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Dr. Daniel Dziubek, an associate professor of parks and recreation and environmental education at Slippery Rock University, has been named Outstanding Environmental Educator of the Year by the Pennsylvania Alliance for Environmental Education. The 400-member PAEE promotes and supports environmental education activities and efforts throughout the state.
Dziubek has been instrumental in upgrading the curriculum at SRU and in recruiting students for the university's graduate programs in environmental education, sustainable systems and park and resource management.
In addition to his teaching duties, Dziubek has been involved in creating the Wild Resources Environmental Workshop for Teachers, which brings 30 to 50 schoolteachers to campus each summer for a two-week camp devoted to environmental matters.
