CALENDAR Religious dates

Dec. 25 is, of course, Christmas. But there are other holy days and special events this month, including:
Sunday: The Eid al-Fitr, or the breaking of the fast, celebrates the end of Ramadan, Islam's month of fasting.
Monday: The last day of Hanukkah, the Jewish feast of lights that celebrates the Jewish victory over religious oppressors and the rededication of the temple in Jerusalem.
Friday: The winter solstice is celebrated by wiccans and Shinto adherents as part of the natural cycle of rebirth.
Dec. 26: The anniversary of the death of the Prophet Zarathustra, the founder of Zoroastrianism.
Dec. 26 to Jan. 1: Kwanzaa, although not a strictly religious event, celebrates African-American heritage.
