Kristen Meechnamed All-American
STAMFORD, Conn. -- Youngstown State's Kristen Meech was named third-team Verizon Academic All-American in a vote by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Meech, YSU's all-time career blocks leader with 562, carries a cumulative grade-point-average of 4.0 in elementary education and is the first YSU volleyball player to receive academic all-american honors.
Meech, who finished her career ranked fifth in YSU history with 1,055 career kills, is a two-time first-team Verizon Academic All-District IV selection.
A two-time all-conference pick, Meech completed her senior season with 278 kills, 1.16 blocks per game and a .290 hitting percentage.

Area ace
COITSVILLE -- Joe Pollock of Coitsville scored a hole-in-one at Bedford Trails Golf Course Wednesday.
Pollock aced the No. 18 hole, 150 yards, using a 6-iron, while playing in a fivesome with Bill Reunallt, Bob Price, C.J. Andre and Henry Thake.
Corbett, Millsnamed All-PAC
Adam Corbett, a record-breaking tackler for the Grove City College football team from Champion High, was selected to the All-Presidents' Athletic Conference first team.
Corbett, a senior linebacker, became Grove City's all-time leading career tackler this year with 349, surpassing Scott Fraser (330).
Corbett led Grove City in tackles for this season with 102, including 39 solo hits; and also topped the PAC in tackles per game with 10.2. Six of his tackles were for losses, and he had three sacks.
Mike Mills, a sophomore defensive end for the Bethany College football team from Boardman High, was named honorable mention.
Mills started all nine games and came up with 34 tackles, including 15 solo stops; with six tackles for losses of 26 yards and 4 1/2 sacks for 25 yards.
Mills helped Bethany to a 6-3 record, including 2-2 in the PAC to tie for second place.
Captain's award
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Scott Anderson, a junior wide receiver from Lakeview High School, received a Captain Award as a member of the Lock Haven University football team.
The Bald Eagles went 3-8 overall and 1-5 in the PSAC Western Division.

Mangino makesstaff hires
LAWRENCE, Kan. -- New Kansas coach Mark Mangino hired SMU assistant Pat Henderson as the Jayhawks' secondary coach Thursday.
Mangino, the former Oklahoma offensive coordinator hired by Kansas on Dec. 4 to replace the fired Terry Allen, will retain defensive line coach Travis Jones and tight ends and special teams coach Clint Bowen from Allen's staff.
Newton lawyerwants bail
DALLAS -- Prosecutors do not want former Dallas Cowboys lineman Nate Newton released following his second drug arrest in less than six weeks.
His lawyer planned to ask a judge today to set bail when Newton appears at a detention hearing on a federal drug charge.
Newton and two others were arrested Wednesday in two vehicles south of Dallas and are accused of possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

LAS VEGAS -- Oakland designated hitter Jeremy Giambi was cited with a misdemeanor for possession of a controlled substance after McCarran International Airport security officers found about a half-ounce of marijuana in his bag. Giambi was released.
Ex-Cowboys are ill
Olympic champion and former NFL star Bob Hayes was in critical condition, hospitalized in Jacksonville, Fla., with flulike symptoms. The only man to win both an Olympic gold medal and a Super Bowl, Hayes was treated earlier this year for heart, liver and kidney ailments, as well as prostate cancer.
In Forth Worth, Texas, Harvey Martin reportedly has pancreatic cancer. Several unidentified sources told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the 51-year-old former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl co-MVP is near death.

DENVER -- Gus Frerotte will be the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos on Sunday while Brian Griese recovers from a concussion. Frerotte will be making his first start since the AFC wild-card playoff game Dec. 31.
