TRUMBULL COUNTY Animal Wealfare League to stop trapping, destruction
Caring for animals is the league's philosophy.
GIRARD -- Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County will no longer provide wildlife nuisance control in the city.
Instead, residents will have to hire a private trapper to catch and dispose of nuisances such a raccoons and skunks.
Debbie Serbati, league shelter director, said Thursday the league no longer has a permit to conduct nuisance trapping and destruction of the animals.
It does, however, maintain a wildlife rehabilitation permit. It allows the league to catch, for example, baby squirrels from a tree that will be cut, and to raise and release them.
Explanation: Serbati explained the Ohio Department of Natural Resources discourages agencies from having both permits.
The league, she said, decided to retain the rehabilitation permit because caring for animals is its philosophy.
The agency contracted with the city a few years ago to conduct wildlife nuisance control after an outbreak of rabies among raccoons. A humane investigator and animal control officer would trap the animals.
Those needing a private trapper can call the city health department, (330) 545-6048.
