Penguins 3rd in I-AA total attendance

YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State placed third in the nation in total home attendance (114,231) and ranked 10th among 122 NCAA Division I-AA football schools in average per game attendance (16,319) during the 2001 season. The attendance figures were released recently by the NCAA.
YSU's per game average came over the course of seven games at Stambaugh Stadium, in which the Penguins posted a 6-1 record.
"I have said from day one, our fans at YSU make the difference for this football team," said coach Jon Heacock said.
"They are part of our football family and we are certainly fortunate to have their support, home and away."
The average marked the fourth-highest season attendance figure in the 61-year history of YSU football and led the Gateway Football Conference for the fifth consecutive season.
YSU's highest per game attendance mark was 2000 when it averaged 18,109 fans over six games to rank eighth in I-AA that year.
