Hearing set for teen facing 10 charges

AUSTINTOWN -- A pretrial hearing is set for 6 p.m. Monday for Ronald L. Simpson III in the same court police say he escaped from this past Monday.
Simpson, 19, of New Road, did not enter pleas to the 10 felony charges against him at his arraignment Thursday in Mahoning County Court in Austintown.
He is charged with driving under suspension, two counts of aggravated vehicular assault, two counts of felony escape, two counts of failure to comply with the order of a police officer, and three counts of felony vandalism.
Police said he escaped from custody after a domestic violence hearing Monday and stole a van that contained two guns.
He led police on a chase, slamming into a passenger car and a police car and injuring one officer, authorities say. According to police reports, Simpson told police he had unlocked leg irons with a piece of metal he found in the court holding cell. He was not handcuffed.
Township police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the sheriff's office are investigating.
