USOC presidentnominated for post
LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- U.S. Olympic Committee president Sandra Baldwin was among 10 people nominated for membership in the International Olympic Committee.
Baldwin would replace Bill Hybl, her predecessor as USOC chief.
IOC members will vote on admitting the new members during their session in Salt Lake City from Feb. 4-6, but all are virtually guaranteed of being accepted.
Also at the IOC meeting, president Jacques Rogge dispelled fears that the triathlon might be dropped from the Olympics, saying he was confident there would be peace in the sport's governing body.
Also, the IOC took the first steps toward having athletes from Afghanistan compete at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Rogge said he would send Fekrou Kidane, a senior Olympic diplomat, to Kabul as soon as Afghanistan achieves political stability and forms a stable government. Rogge added, however, that there was no chance of Afghan athletes competing in the Salt Lake City Winter Games in February.
