Lieutenant is promoted to fire chief

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Borough council has named Lt. Steve Thompson fire chief, succeeding Walter "Chad" Sankey, who is retiring Feb. 15.
Thompson, 36, of Chambers Avenue, is a nine-year veteran of the department and has been a lieutenant the past seven years.
The department has seven full-time members and a corps of volunteers. Thompson said he has no immediate plans for change.
Council also hired Tracey Vale of Baker Road as bookkeeper-treasurer to replace Linda Crisman, who has resigned after being elected borough tax collector in November.
Vale takes over the job Monday at an annual salary of $26,000.
Council delayed action on the hiring a borough manager to succeed Peter Nicoloff, who resigned in October.
Mayor Clifford Harriger said final details need to be worked out in a contract for the new manager who is coming here from Tennessee. Officials have not released his name.
Council also delayed final votes on new contracts for police, street department and wastewater treatment plant employees. The 2002 budget is not finalized, and council wants to complete that before approving contracts, Harriger said.
Council has indicated it wants no tax increases next year.
