SALEM -- Former city councilman Larry Muntz, 60, of 1804 S. Lincoln Ave., died earlier this week at Salem Community Hospital after an illness. Muntz served as a 4th Ward Republican councilman from 1981 through 1987, Mayor Larry DeJane said after Muntz's death Monday. "He served the city well," DeJane said of Muntz. He also was a member of the Salem Elks, Salem Jaycees and Salem Rotary. Muntz is survived by his wife, Dawna, and two daughters. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Winona Methodist Church. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stark Memorial Funeral Home.
Car, pony collision
DARLINGTON, Pa. -- A Columbiana, Ohio, woman was hurt in a collision between her car and a pony. Pennsylvania State Police said the pony had wandered onto Pa. Route 551, near Little Beaver Road, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when the driver, Joyce Witt, 40, of 139 East Friend St., crashed into it. She suffered minor injuries and was treated at Beaver Medical Center, police said. There was no word from police on the condition of the pony.
Crime watch meeting
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Dogs will be the topic at the December crime watch meeting of the Springfield Township Police Department at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the township administration building, 3475 South Range Road. Marcus McLemore of McLemore's Kennel will present "Tips on Good Canine Citizenship" and "Utilizing Your Dog's Potential to Alert You to Crime and Emergencies."
Self-defense workshop
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield Township Crime Watch is sponsoring a self-defense workshop for women from 6 to 10 p.m. Jan. 15 at the township administration building at 3475 E. South Range Road. Sgt. Bob Magnuson of the Canfield Police Department will cover personal response options and effective counter techniques. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling (330) 542-2377 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Drug, weapons charges
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Ronald E. Clark, 29, of New Castle faces charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and carrying a firearm without a license. Pennsylvania State Police said they stopped Clark on Cunningham Avenue at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday and took him into custody on an unrelated warrant. Police said they obtained a search warrant for his car and found about 4.5 ounces of suspected marijuana. They also found an assault rifle in the car, police said. Clark was arraigned before District Justice J.V. Lamb and placed in Lawrence County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bond.
Toolbox, tools stolen
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Someone took a toolbox and tools valued at $1,200 from the bed of a pickup truck at the Shenango Valley Mall, Hermitage police said Wednesday. The tools were taken sometime from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, they said.
Part-time officers hired
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Lawrence County Prison board hired three part-time corrections officers. Hired at the board's meeting Wednesday were Julie McConnell of Volant, Ryan Struthers of Mercer and James Good of New Castle. They will earn $10.44 an hour and work as needed. Warden William Hall said the part-timers fill in when full-time corrections officers are on vacation or sick.
Drug indictment
PITTSBURGH -- Marquis Holmes, 24, of West North Street, New Castle, has been indicted by a federal grand jury here on one count of "violating federal drug laws," federal officials said. According to the indictment, Holmes possessed more than 0.176 ounces of crack cocaine Nov. 7. He could face up to 40 years in prison and a $200,000 fine if convicted. The Oil City Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation leading to Holmes' indictment.
Business burglaries
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Police think that a burglar hitting downtown businesses over the past two weeks has struck again. Someone pried a plywood covering off a window at Crystal's Creative Cuts at 215 Main St. early Wednesday and then used a brick to smash through the glass. The intruder took an undisclosed amount of money from the office. Police said they think it is the same person responsible for eight other burglaries of downtown businesses.
