YOUNGSTOWN Toddler dies of drug overdose
The boy's grandmother told police she takes the drug for pain but buys it on the street, not by prescription.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-month-old boy who overdosed on the prescription painkiller OxyContin died Monday in Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital.
Justin Hoschar of Julian Street, who was on a respirator in critical condition Monday morning, had been brought to the hospital by ambulance Friday for a vitamin overdose.
An emergency room physician told police Justin had overdosed on OxyContin.
Charges: The baby's grandmother, Mary Ann Barnett, 44, of Julian Street, is facing two felony drug abuse charges and two misdemeanor drug abuse charges and a misdemeanor violation of drug labeling law.
Judge Beth Kobly of Youngstown Municipal Court set her bond at $13,000 Monday and appointed a lawyer for her.
Barnett pleaded innocent to the misdemeanor charges and entered no plea on the felony charges.
Barnett was arrested Saturday after police found suspected OxyContin and other loose pills in her residence.
She said in court Monday that Justin and his sister were in her care because her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend were unwilling or financially unable to care for them.
Barnett told police she takes OxyContin for pain but buys it on the street and doesn't have a prescription for it.
OxyContin is a powerful painkiller most commonly associated with the treatment of cancer.
Police agencies in Mahoning and Trumbull counties have reported increasing signs of its abuse.
