Thiel players namedto all-conference
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Seven Thiel College football players from the Youngstown area have been selected to the All-Presidents' Athletic Conference team.
Kennard Davis, a freshman defensive back from Farrell High, made the first team; while Kevin Wilder, a senior defensive back from East High; and Robert Drake, a freshman linebacker from Chaney High, were picked to the second team. Wilder also made honorable mention as a receiver.
Honorable mentions were Clinton Harden, senior defensive lineman from East High; Ryan Reed, senior defensive lineman from West Branch High; Jamaal Dawson, freshman tight end from Warren Harding; and Dan Hilton, junior defensive back from Union High.
Davis led Thiel in interceptions with nine for 220 yards, and also had the second-most tackles with 78, including 43 solo stops. Drake led with 86, 32 of them unassisted and eight for losses with two interceptions.
Wilder was the Tomcats' top receiver and punt-return man who also ranked 10th in tackles. He had 45 catches for 541 and three TDs, and 10 punt returns for 79 yards for a 7.9-yard average; with 34 tackles (16 solo hits) and two interceptions.
Dawson caught nine passes for 114 yards.
Thiel had a 2-8 record, including 1-5 in PAC.
Bishoff earns honor
GRANVILLE -- Brian Bishoff, a freshman wide receiver for the Denison University football team this season from Howland High, has been selected as the team's "Offensive Rookie of the Year" at the recent Big Red Football Banquet.
Bishoff caught 23 passes for 304 yards and three TDs, to rank among the top 25 receivers in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
His coach at Howland was Dick Angle.
Megan Young ontwo all-star teams
CANTON -- Megan Young from Diamond and Southeast High, a senior defender and forward on the Malone College women's soccer team, has been selected to two all-star teams.
Young, the Pioneers' third-leading scorer with 24 points on nine goals and six assists, was selected to the All-American Mideast Conference first team. She was an All-AMC second-team pick as a freshman.
Young also was named for the third time to the National Christian College Athletic Association All-Region team.
She helped Malone to an 18-3-1 record, including 15-0-1 in the AMC for the regular-season championship.
The Pioneers wound up 16th in the NAIA national rankings.
Mt. Union coaches given awards
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College swept the Ohio Athletic Conference cross country Coach of the Year awards.
Deana Fresenko was the OAC's Women's Coach of the Year for taking the Raiders to a second place finish in the conference.
John Homon was tabbed Men's Coach of the Year for winning the conference title and finishing 17th at the national meet.
Chuck Moore namedAll-American
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College senior running back Chuck Moore has been named to the American Football Coaches Association Division III All-American Team.
Moore, who last week was named the Gagliardi Trophy winner as the Div. III Player of the Year, rushed for a school-record 2,076 yards on 285 carries, good for a 7.3 yard per carry average this season.
He also scored 33 touchdowns this year.
Conklin playing,scoring at Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Former Hubbard High standout Brian Conklin had six points and led Nebraska in rebounding as the Cornhuskers beat Oral Roberts University, 61-55, in men's basketball Saturday.
Conklin made one of Nebraska's six 3-point goals and grabbed 11 of the Cornhuskers' 39 rebounds. Nebraska's record is 6-0.

Andre Miller pickedplayer of the week
CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers guard Andre Miller was named Eastern Conference player of the week after scoring a career-high 34 points in a 100-88 defeat of the Detroit Pistons.
Miller averaged 18 points, 11.3 assists, 6.3 rebounds and 1.67 steals in three games last week. He shot 55 percent from the field and led the Cavaliers to two victories.

NFL moves
Buffalo Bills receiver Peerless Price was fined $30,000 by the NFL for striking an opponent after the end of Buffalo's game against San Francisco on Dec. 2.
Detroit Lions safety Tommy Bennett has been suspended for the final four games of the season for violating the NFL's policy banning steroid use.
Jacksonville Jaguars receiver R. Jay Soward was suspended indefinitely for breaking team rules, making it even less likely the troubled receiver will ever play for the team again.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Oklahoma's Roy Williams won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the top collegiate defensive player, edging Julius Peppers of North Carolina.
