Car, gun stolen
BOARDMAN -- A 9mm handgun, portable police radio and car were stolen from the home of a Youngstown police captain who lives in the township, Boardman police reports say. Youngstown police said the stolen gun was issued by the city department.
The captain told Boardman officers that he had left his home in a hurry at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday and may have left a door open, police reports show. He returned at about 1:10 a.m. Sunday, found the door open and two bedrooms ransacked. The captain told police the missing car is a 1985 Buick; also missing were its keys that had hung on a hook near the door.
Treated for stab wound
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 22-year-old South Side man told police he was stabbed with a steak knife at a house on Pasadena Avenue by a woman he used to date. Police were called to interview the victim at St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was being treated for a stab wound to the lower stomach. The Cameron Avenue man said he knew only the woman's first name and that she is in her 20s.
Ruling on council vote
YOUNGSTOWN -- Law Director Robert Bush Jr. has ruled that a 4-3 city council vote late last month constitutes approval for the item.
Council voted Nov. 29 to authorize the board of control to renew the contract of Veronica Foster as director of the Weed & amp; Seed program, a South Side anti-crime, neighborhood redevelopment program.
The item had been in the second of three readings. Some council members said council rules required six votes to pass an item when it is in a second reading. Others said four votes were enough for passage.
Bush ruled that only four votes were needed in this case. The legislation takes effect 30 days after the vote.
Fire destroys car
YOUNGSTOWN -- City firefighters extinguished a fire that had destroyed a 1989 Cadillac El Dorado behind an abandoned apartment building on the city's South Side, city police reports show.
Officers found the burning car at about 7:45 p.m. Monday on Falls Avenue near Edwards Street. The vehicle was unoccupied. Police found a stocking cap on the gas cap and profanity scratched into the hood of the car. A Roxbury Avenue woman had reported at about 9 a.m. Monday that the vehicle was stolen during the night from in front of her house, police said. The vehicle was held for an arson investigation.
Threatened with gun
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 21-year-old West Side man reported to police that he was threatened with a gun by a man in the parking lot of Randy's Lounge on Salt Springs Road.
The man said he was at the lounge at about 6 p.m. Monday when the gunman, about 22, pulled a .44-caliber handgun and threatened to shoot. He said he had been approached and threatened by the same man with a handgun at the lounge two days earlier.
Detective promoted
AUSTINTOWN -- Township trustees promoted Daniel Kosco from police detective to detective sergeant. The trustees approved the promotion at a meeting Monday night. Kosco, 35, has been a member of the township police force for 14 years. He has served as a detective for about a year.
Couldn't wait for Santa
SALEM -- A 3-year-old Salem boy is safe and sound today after being found wandering alone. He told authorities he had gone toy shopping.
A motorist brought the youngster into the police station around 11:40 p.m. Monday after discovering him walking in the middle of East State Street near the east side commercial district. The youngster was dressed in pajamas and a jacket but no shoes. He had been spending the night with his grandmother who lives on the 200 block of Roosevelt Avenue, which intersects with East State. After everyone was in bed, the boy got up and left the house to go toy shopping, police determined.
Christmas programs
EAST PALESTINE -- Two children's Christmas programs at East Palestine Memorial Public Library, 309 N. Market St., will be at 4:15 p.m. Thursday and 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
Registration is required for a Christmas craft program Thursday for children 6 to 12. Next Tuesday's event is a program of Christmas stories and music and is open to all ages. Call the library to register.
