AUSTINTOWN Man faces charges of rape, kidnapping in summer attack

The victim said she the last thing she remembered was dancing at the township nightspot.
AUSTINTOWN -- A Youngstown man accused of assaulting a 21-year-old Canfield woman this summer has been charged with felony kidnapping and rape.
Jawan B. Starkey, 21, of Lansdowne Boulevard, heard the charges Monday in Mahoning County Court here. A $75,000 cash bond was set for each charge. No plea was entered because the charges are felonies.
A pre-trial hearing has been set for 9 a.m. Dec. 31. Starkey, who is being held at the Mahoning County Jail, was arrested Friday afternoon at his home by the Mahoning County Violent Crimes Task Force.
Police said DNA test results confirm that Starkey is responsible for the assault.
What happened: The Canfield woman was picked up by Youngstown police at 3:30 a.m. June 15 at a Liberty Street home. She had knocked on the door of the home to ask for help. She was not wearing shoes or carrying her purse.
The woman told police she had no memory of what occurred to her between 12:30 a.m. and the afternoon of June 15. She said the last thing she remembers is dancing with her friends at The Mill nightclub on South Raccoon Road.
Starkey was arrested the night of June 16 after he was found using the woman's credit cards at a Kaufmann's store in Niles.
The number of crimes reported at or near The Mill have led the township trustees and police to oppose attempts to renew the club's liquor license. The trustees also have said they may take back the request if The Mill's owners improve security around the club.
Police Lt. Mark Durkin said Starkey's arrest will not affect the liquor license request.
"Unfortunately, this is a crime that can occur anywhere," he said. "Realistically, they [The Milll's ownership] had no way of controlling that."
