Canfield Twp. official seeks to limit growth

CANFIELD -- The Boardman retail environment is creeping toward Canfield Township, and Dave Morrison and other township officials are doing their best to fight it off.
"We're always constantly combating that type of thing," said Morrison, the township zoning inspector.
Morrison is considering plans for the construction of a Sheetz gas station at the corner of South Raccoon Road and U.S. Route 224. He also expects that in the near future he will be asked to review plans for a plaza on Route 224 east of Summit Drive.
A Dunkin' Donuts and a Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream restaurant are under construction in front of the proposed site of the plaza. Work on the restaurants is expected to be complete next month.
Morrison said that once the plaza is constructed, he feels Route 224 will have enough stores to serve the people of Canfield Township.
"Anything else is too excessive," he said.
Morrison said he feels excess development could hurt the small-town atmosphere cherished by township residents. As a result, he said he wants to ensure that excess development does not occur.
