RAY SWANSON | Keystoner W & amp;J's Dawson is PAC's top player

Brian Dawson, a junior quarterback for the Washington & amp; Jefferson College football team from Pittsburgh (Thomas Jefferson High), recently was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Player of the Year while being named to the All-PAC First Team.
He was one of five W & amp;J players named to the first team offense, while another six were picked to the first team defense.
Dawson earned his merits, leading his team to a perfect 10-0 regular season, the first unbeaten regular season since 1995 for the Presidents.
In the regular-season finale, Dawson completed 20-for-33 passes for 306 years and three touchdowns. With that performance, he broke his second career record in as many weeks, as he is now W & amp;J's single season total offense leader. He holds 17 school records.
John Banaszak of the Presidents was named the 2001 PAC Football Coach of the Year.
Other picks: Several area players earned first-team berths on the all-conference offense, including Thiel's junior wide receiver, Donte Harris, and Grove City's junior lineman, Derek Bostick.
First-team defensive selections were Thiel freshman back Kennard Davis and Grove City senior linebacker Adam Corbett from Champion High.
The ALL-PAC second team offense included Grove City's Tony Masterofrancesco, sophomore lineman; Mark Byrer, junior tight end, and Mike Orlando, running back. Thiel picks were Dave Hendricks, freshman lineman, and T.J. Wiley, senior quarterback.
Second team defense picks included Grove City's, Jonathan Forbes, senior lineman; John Bialowas, sophomore linebacker, and Josh Sachieben, senior defensive back, and Thiel's Robert Drake, freshman linebacker, and Kevin Wilder, senior defensive back. Drake and Wilder are from Youngstown.
Lipiello sets record: Westminster College wide receiver Brian Lipiello closed out his career in a record-setting performance.
In the Titans' season finale against Waynesburg, a 16-14 win, Lipiello caught two touchdown passes of 19 and 22 yards and set a single-season yards receiving mark with 866. He surpassed the previous mark of 847 set by Tim McNeil in 1994. Westminster closed out the 2001 season with a 4-5 record.
Banner year: Shannon Simmons, a 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter, led the Westminster volleyball team to a 27-8 record in 2001, including a 10-0 mark against teams from the PAC. She led the Titans in digs (509) and service aces (45), while ranking second in kills (357) and third in blocks (81). She was one of 13 players named to the Verizon Academic All-District II College Division volleyball team.
In the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Volleyball Championships, won by Westminster with wins over American International and Concordia, Shannon was named tournament MVP. In the two wins she totaled 23 kills, 10 assists, 18 digs, and four blocks.
Bartolic dies: Frank Bartolic, owner of Birchwood Golf Course in Transfer, passed away on Nov. 27. He was 75.
Frank devoted most of his life to the game of golf, building a par-3 course in 1962. Later, he added a regulation nine-hole layout in 1980 and another nine holes in 1997. Frank and his wife Mary, along with son David, operated the course, one of the most scenic layouts in the Mercer County.
The Bartolic family was extremely pleased with Birchwood, and worked many hours each day in maintaining the course for play. Our sincere sympathy to Mary and the Bartolic family.
