YOUNGSTOWN -- A 23-year-old East Side man said he was shot once in the calf as he sat on the front porch of his Shehy Street home around 10:20 p.m. Friday, police reports show. The man told police a man he does not know wearing a hooded jacket approached him from behind the house, called out his name and fired one shot.
Reports said the man was taken to Forum Health Northside Medical Center. Hospital officials said he was not there late Saturday.
Gun theft at apartment
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 62-year-old North Side man reported that a .38-caliber handgun had been stolen Saturday from his Gypsy Lane apartment, police said.
The man told police he had left home about 5 a.m., and his son left at about 10 a.m. When the father returned at about 3 p.m., the $300 gun and a $250 diamond ring were missing. The apartment door lock was damaged.
Energy assistance
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Area Community Action Council is taking applications for the emergency Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps low-income households whose utilities have been terminated or are under threat of disconnection, or who have less than a 10-day supply of bulk fuel.
The program runs until March 31. Call (330) 480-9630 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on business days for an appointment. Applicants must report total household income for the past three months during the interview and bring copies of their gas and electric bills, and if disabled, proof of disability.
Interfaith agency grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Interfaith Home Maintenance Service has received a $150,000 state grant. The nonprofit agency will use the money to assist low-income families with emergency rent, mortgage and utility payments, housing counseling, tenant-landlord mediation, emergency home repairs, handicapped accessibility modifications and down-payment assistance.
