Julie Gallo's 18 points power Poland
POLAND -- Senior center Julie Gallo had six of her game-high 18 points in the second quarter Saturday to turn the tide in favor of Poland which beat Jefferson Area, 50-37, in high school girls basketball.
Poland had a 12-11 lead after one quarter until out-scoring Jefferson 15-5 in the second. In that same quarter, sophomore guard Steffi Graf had five points including a 3-point goal.
The Bulldogs have won their three straight games after a season-opening loss to Kiski Area, 51-49, in the West Mifflin Tournament. Poland has wins over Ringgold (62-50) and Springfield (67-31).
All of Gallo's points came from the paint where she attempted 17 shots.
Allison Czayka's 10 points paced Jefferson Area.
Niles 43, McDonald 33: NILES -- Stacia Ray scored 18 points and had seven steals to lead Niles.
The Red Dragons held McDonald scoreless in the first quarter, but led just 19-17 at halftime. Ray hit 7 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
Michelle Rhodes had 12 points, Taura Mitchell scored 11 points and Jaclyn Sears grabbed eight rebounds for Niles (1-3).
Alyssa Hart scored 12 points for McDonald (0-3).
Salem 72, Crestview 44: SALEM -- Allyson Cotter scored 23 points and Abby Markovich added 18 as the Quakers improved to 5-1.
Cotter also made eight rebounds, five steals and five assists. Tiffany Heestand scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds.
For the Rebels (2-2), Katie Kibby scored 11 points and Kate Kestner added 10.
