Christmas play
BOARDMAN -- The 34west Theater Company of Boardman is performing "The Treasure of Christmas Island" at several locations. The play tells the adventures of Molly Jacobsen, who sets sail with Captain Blackbeard to discover the spiritual meaning of Christmas. The 50-minute play is suitable for ages 5 and up. It's offered at several locations, including:
UWalnut Creek Community Church, Cortland, 10 a.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Christmas story
McDONALD -- Woodland Park United Methodist Church will present "Bethlehem Roadhouse" at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 24. The free dinner theater tells the Christmas story in a contemporary setting. Because of food preparation and limited seating, reservations are needed. Call (330) 530-9439.

AUSTINTOWN -- Wickliffe Presbyterian Church's choir will present a Christmas program, "We Will Know Peace," at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 16.

AUSTINTOWN -- Four Mile Run Christian Church will present a Christmas program, "From the Manger to the Cross," at 7 p.m. Dec. 16.
Musical set
NILES -- First Baptist Church's adult choir and drama team will present the Christmas musical, "Maranatha! The Lord is Come," at 6 p.m. Sunday and at 7 p.m. Monday. Monday's presentation includes the choir from Bailey Road Baptist Church in North Jackson and refreshments afterward.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Area churches will have live Nativity scenes this year. They include:
UTrinity Lutheran Church, Niles, from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 21, 22 and 23.
UFirst Christian Church of Newton Falls, from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 15.
UCalvary United Methodist Church, North Lima, from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 22 and 23, and from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. Dec. 24.
Bethlehem walk
BRACEVILLE -- Braceville United Methodist Church will present "How Far To Bethlehem Walk" from 5 to 8 p.m. today. Participants led on a free tour to search for the Christ child will encounter Roman soldiers, angels, shepherds, innkeepers and kings.
Choirs to perform
BOARDMAN -- St. James Episcopal Church will present "Christmas Around the World," featuring its choir and the Concordia Chorus of the Youngstown Saxon Club at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The concert will feature music from American and European composers.
Seasonal music
WARREN -- A musical program "Tis The Season for Holiday Harmony," is at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church. Music will be provided by The Stephen Foster Chorus and Sounds of Square Country. Food and a holiday bake sale will follow the performance. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for students. Children age 6 and under will be admitted free. Tickets available at the door.

CANFIELD -- Lord of Life Lutheran Church will have a soup supper at 6 p.m. followed by Vespers at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Dec. 18. there will be a children's Christmas pageant, "The Living Creche" at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

GIRARD -- First United Methodist Church children's choir will present a Christmas musical, "The Unfriendly Beasts," at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

Marriage conference
WARREN -- Shasta and Shelia Lampley, members of New Jerusalem Fellowship, will have a free Marriage Restoration Conference at the Holiday Inn Express from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 29. The theme is "How well do you know your mate?" The event is sponsored by Spencer Ministries. Call (330) 793-9174.
Official appointed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mary Ellen Andersen, president and chief executive officer of the Diocese of Youngstown Catholic Charities Corporation and Diocesan Director of Social Services, has been named to the task force on faith-based and other nonprofit organizations by Gov. Taft. Her term runs until Oct. 28, 2002. The task force recommends the ways to remove any barriers so faith-based and other nonprofit organizations can cooperate with public agencies in helping those who receive public services.
Catholic relief appeal
YOUNGSTOWN -- Catholic Relief Services, the official overseas relief and development agency of the United States Catholic Bishops, wants to raise $50 million to meet the needs of Afghans and refugees in Pakistan.
