BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP Rayen cruises as 10 players score



Anthony Jones and Jamal Higgs led the way for the Tigers against Vision Quest.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Anthony Jones fired in 24 points and Jamal Higgs added 21, as The Rayen School upended Vision Quest 80-56 Friday night in the Tigers' gymnasium.
Ahead 31-30 at intermission, the Tigers, in their season opener, started to pull away in the third quarter as they outscored Vision Quest 21-14.
Ten players got into the scoring column for coach Phil House's Rayen team. Jones grabbed eight rebounds.
Mike Cochran led Vision Quest with 13 points and Warren Graham chipped in with 11.
Ursuline 84, St. Thomas Aquinas 68: LOUISVILLE -- Unbeaten Ursuline High put four players in double figures as the Irish upended Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas.
The Irish were sparked by John Poindexter with 18 points and three steals. Kevin Coleman made five 3-point baskets for 15 points. Andre Edmonds grabbed 10 rebounds and Marc Palermo had 12 assists.
Martese Jackson led the Knights with 18 points.
South Range 54, Leetonia 41: NORTH LIMA -- The Raiders used a 20-7 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to defeat Leetonia in the opener for both teams.
The score was tied 34-34 after three quarters, but South Range put the game away in the fourth.
Matt Kirk had 16 points and six rebounds to lead the Raiders, while Jason King added 14 points and George Rohan 11.
Ryan Copeland grabbed six rebounds for South Range, while Jim Sanders had five rebounds and three assists.
Leetonia was led by Jeremy Houglin with 11 points.
Newton Falls 68, Jackson-Milton 34: NEWTON FALLS -- Senior post players Eric Lance and Marty Hutchinson had 16 and 13 points, respectively, as the Tigers won their second straight game.
The 6-4 Lance grabbed nine of the Tigers' 32 rebounds. Newton Falls opened the season with a 53-48 win over Warren JFK.
Justin Vayner's nine points led J-M (2-1).
Lisbon 90, Lowellville 42: LOWELLVILLE -- Lisbon jumped out to a 39-21 halftime lead, then out-scored the Rockets in the third period, 23-5, en route to victory.
Lucian Smith poured in 26 points, while Ben Dickey added 14 and Jay Yorty 13 for the Blue Devils (2-0). Dickey had 16 points and Yorty nine. Yorty also had four assists, while Matt Adams had five steals.
Don Dackner and Mike Palumbo had 11 points apiece for Lowellville (0-3), which made 10 field goals and 20 of 36 free throws. Chad Likens secured eight rebounds for Lowellville.
Columbiana 65, Western Reserve 56: BERLIN CENTER -- A 21-9 surge in the third quarter was the difference as Columbiana (1-1) came from behind to record the victory.
Gerald Grim paced the Clippers with 17 points, while Austen Couchenour chipped in with 13.
Ryan Jones led the Blue Devils 16 points, and Jeremy Shevel chipped in with 11.
Bristol 91, Ledgemont 41: THOMPSON -- Bristol's balanced scoring attack had five players in double figures.
The Panthers (2-1) were paced by Craig Giesy with 14 points. John King, David Whitt and Ben Imhoff added 13 apiece and Ray Cox finished with 12.
King had 10 assists and seven steals. Jon Radabauch led Ledgemont with nine points.
Youngstown Christian 72, Warren Christian 37: WARREN -- Aaron Young scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had six steals to lead Youngstown Christian past Warren Christian (1-1).
Frank Dota added 12 points and eight rebounds for Youngstown (1-2).
Reynolds 49, Seneca 43: REYNOLDS, Pa. -- In a close game in which Reynolds managed to stay ahead slightly, senior point guard Deacon Jones poured in 21 points for the Don Andres-coached Raiders (2-1).
In its last outing, Reynolds lost to Fairview, 46-40.
Dan Kilgore added 11 points for the winners, while Don Schmidt grabbed 11 of Reynolds' 31 rebounds.
John Katsiadas had 18 points for Seneca, which totaled 28 rebounds.
