YOUNGSTOWN -- Sentencing for convicted rapist Jose Manuel Rosado has been postponed until after the Ohio Adult Parole Authority conducts a background check.
A jury from Mahoning County Common Pleas Court convicted Rosado, 38, of Lanterman Road, of 19 counts of rape and acquitted him of one count Wednesday. He faces life in prison without parole. Judge Robert Lisotto was going to sentence him Thursday, but decided instead to order the presentence investigation.
Decorations stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone hauled away two large reindeer decorations Thursday night that had been staked down in the front yard of a South Glenellen Avenue house.
The West Side homeowner said the 4-foot mechanical reindeer, with white lighted movable heads, were too big for kids to walk off with and suspects that someone with a van took them.
Window shattered
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Crandall Avenue couple sitting on their couch about 6 p.m. Thursday heard gunshots, then realized their living room window had shattered, police said.
Police didn't find any bullet holes in the walls or ceiling. The North Side couple told police that they didn't see anyone run away and have no suspects in mind.
Truancy charges
STRUTHERS -- A 37-year old Morrison Street woman was charged with violating the city's parental responsibility law for not ensuring that her three children, ages 5, 13, and 16, attend school without excessive absences.
The city's truancy officer said he met with the mother Oct. 17 to warn her about her children's excessive absences. He attempted to meet with her two more times -- Nov. 21 and Dec. 5 -- but said the mother did not attend either meeting. School officials were not available to comment.
Cash missing
BOARDMAN -- A township physician told police he noticed small sums of cash missing from his office over the past eight months.
His accountant and billing company have also detected discrepancies in his medical practice's financial statements, police said. Police reports say a secretary in the office, located on Tiffany Boulevard, admitted Thursday embezzling about $2,000. She said she has been taking small sums of cash since May, police said.
Bad behavior
BOARDMAN -- Security at Southern Park Mall apprehended a man accused of accosting a 17-year-old female, police said. The young woman told police she was approached by the man in a vestibule at the mall about 4:15 p.m. Thursday while she was waiting for a ride.
The victim told police the man approached her, repeatedly complimented her on her looks and put his arm around her. She pushed him away, but he continued to make suggestive comments and grabbed her buttocks before he left to catch a bus, police said.
Library grant resources
YOUNGSTOWN -- Representatives of nonprofit organizations can learn more about library resources and grant-seeking in a Grant Center orientation program scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Public Library Youngstown & amp; Mahoning County's meeting room, 305 Wick Ave.
The program, a basic orientation to the center's collection of grant materials, is free. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (330) 744-8636 and pressing "2" at the phone prompt for reference information.
Tax lien notification
YOUNGSTOWN -- About 2,100 property owners who are delinquent in paying property taxes will be notified this week that the land will be included in a tax lien sale, said Mahoning County Treasurer John Reardon. The county will sell the county's lien against the delinquent property to a private investor for the full amount of back taxes plus an administrative fee.
In turn, the buyer will either collect from the land owner within a year, or have the right to foreclose on the property to recoup his or her investment. The total taxes owed on the affected property is about $3.6 million, Reardon said. The sale is tentatively scheduled for February.
