LISBON Session will prepare substitutes to teach

Participants will learn what a substitute teacher should expect in a classroom.
LISBON -- Columbiana Educational Service Center personnel hope to boost area substitute teacher rolls with a one-day training session Jan. 7.
The session will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center, 38720 Saltwell Road, and includes continental breakfast.
Michelle Joseph, CESC administrative secretary, said the course is designed to prepare people who have a four-year college degree to obtain a substitute teaching certificate.
Joseph said substitute teaching gives people the opportunity to teach in a classroom setting, and the CESC class teaches them what to expect.
She said school districts often have trouble finding substitute teachers, especially during cold and flu season, when both teachers and potential substitutes take ill.
What will happen: Participants will be fingerprinted and must provide information for police and FBI background checks, she said. Anyone who has lived outside Ohio in the past five years must submit to an FBI check, she said. Continental breakfast will be available as participants register and are fingerprinted.
To apply for a substitute teaching certificate, participants must provide official college transcripts, a driver's license or photo identification, a social security card, a check or money order for $20 to pay for fingerprinting and background checks and a check or money order for $12 to pay for the substitute teaching certificate.
Participants may have earned a four-year college degree in any subject area to qualify, she said. Temporary certificates are issued for one year, but some people may qualify for a five-year certificate, depending on the coursework they have completed, she said.
