EAST PALESTINE -- Behind 18 points from Crystal Schuler and a 16-0 run in the second quarter Thursday, the South Range High girls basketball team defeated East Palestine, 44-33.
With South Range (3-0) ahead 8-7 early in the second period, Schuler triggered the 16-0 surge as the Raiders used a stifling defense to force seven East Palestine turnovers in the first four minutes, 22 seconds of the quarter.
The Raiders converted four of those mistakes into baskets for a 24-7 lead with just more than two minutes remaining before halftime.
"We've had runs like that this season and when we get ready to play, we can get it rolling," South Range coach Don Feren said. "Tonight, we got good pressure on them and were able to run it up and down.
"This 3-0 start is really important because I was worried that it could have been 0-3," Feren said.
Schuler, who also had eight of her team's 20 rebounds, said, "We were expecting to see a box and one from them and we when we didn't, we were able to do pretty much what we wanted to do."
Stephanie Foster ended the East Palestine drought with less than a minute to go in the half when she worked her way inside for a basket.
East Palestine, trailing 30-15 midway through the third period, ran off six straight points in less than a minute; Foster's left-handed layup with 0:51 remaining cut the margin to nine points, 30-21.
However, the Bulldogs didn't score again until 4:52 of the final quarter when Ashley Martin tossed in two free throws.
By then, South Range was easily ahead. A field goal by Stephanie Jeffers ended the Bulldogs' drought at 3:12.
South Range, which was 20-of-45 from the field, got six assists from Jessie Clayton.
