Thiel fraternity sets $50,000 goal for charity

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The brothers of Phi Theta Phi fraternity will already be at the halfway mark of their goal to raise $50,000 when they set off Friday for Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
The Thiel College fraternity has raised more than $1 million for the hospital over 34 years of annual walk-a-thons on the first weekend in December. This year's goal is $50,000 and Nick Montanaro, 2001 walk chairman, said the campaign coffers already hold $25,000 collected over the past several weeks.
Between 40 and 50 Phi Theta Phi members and friends will make the two-day, 100-mile trip to Pittsburgh this weekend, stopping to gather contributions from people and motorists along the way.
The money collected goes into the hospital's Free Care Fund which helps cover health-care treatment costs for children not covered by insurance.
