WGH banquetset Dec. 17
WARREN -- The Warren G. Harding Gridiron Club will sponsor its 12th annual recognition banquet Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. at St. Demetrios Community Center, 3223 Atlantic St.

Borderhawksimprove to 5-0
BOARDMAN -- The Youngstown Borderhawks travel ice hockey team defeated Shaker Heights 7-2 to improve to 5-0.
Scoring goals were Jared Taylor, Ryan Demyen, Chase Leonelli and Conner Schultheis. Goalie Adam Robertson stopped 15 shots.
Potter playingin Germany
MONCHENGLADBACH, Germany -- Jesse Potter, a Boardman High graduate, is playing power forward for the NVV Lions basketball club.
He is averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds a game for the Lions (6-2), who are third in their conference.
Last season, Potter played professional ball in Madeira, Portugal.

HOF inductees
COLUMBUS -- Wlll Collins, coach of Lykens, Toledo Rogers and Bellefontaine High Schools; Doc Daugherty, Euclid High; Gary Walters, Newark High; Jim Lawhead, Lorain Catholic High along with Richard Armstrong, (honorary), former OHSAA Commissioner will be inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame April 13, 2002.
The four men were head coaches for a total of 141 years and accumulated 2,068 victories.
Induction ceremonies will be at the Worthington Holiday Inn.

Broncos losedraft choice
DENVER -- Although disappointed and confused by the ruling, Denver coach Mike Shanahan said the Broncos will abide by an NFL decision that will cost the team a third-round draft choice and a fine of nearly $1 million.
NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue found the Broncos guilty of violating guidelines under the league's deferred compensation fund.
The team was fined $305,000 and ordered to pay $663,000 in interest on money the team failed to submit in a timely fashion to the league's deferred compensation fund during a two-year period from 1998-99.
Grossman namedplayer of year
NEW YORK -- Rex Grossman might remember his record-setting year at Florida more for the sting of a season-shattering loss.
Despite a gallant effort by Grossman, Florida lost to Tennessee 34-32 last week and missed a chance to play for the Southeastern Conference title and a spot in the BCS' national championship game in the Rose Bowl.
The loss did little to hurt the stature of the nation's top-rated passer, who was chosen as The Associated Press College Player of the Year.
Yankees hireassistant G.M.
NEW YORK -- Jean Afterman, a former aide to agent Don Nomura, was hired by the New York Yankees as their assistant general manager.
Afterman replaces Kim Ng, who resigned after four years as the assistant to general manager Brian Cashman and was hired as assistant GM of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The only other woman who is an assistant GM in the majors is Boston's Elaine Weddington Steward.

NEW YORK -- Even though New York City faces three successive years of budget deficits greater than $3.5 billion, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said he wants to complete new stadium deals for the Mets and Yankees before he leaves office Dec. 31.
Miracle reunion
NEW YORK -- America's 1980 gold-medal hockey team will play together for the first time since Lake Placid when it meets a team of NHL old-timers in Los Angeles on Feb. 1, the day before the NHL All-Star game.
The game will cap a series of clinics given by the Olympic team members, beginning this week in Philadelphia.
Former champcleared to return
MONACO, Monte Carlo -- Former Olympic champion Dieter Baumann was cleared to return to competition next month after track and field's ruling body lifted an extended drug ban.
Baumann's original two-year suspension for testing positive for the banned steroid nandrolone ends Jan. 21.
