LAKE MILTON Salem man confesses making up rape story

Police said the man's story ran out of gas.
LAKE MILTON -- A Salem man has confessed to police that his story about being robbed and gang-raped last month was a hoax.
Milton Police Chief William Moretz said Joseph Hampson's story didn't add up and, when confronted with the results of a police investigation, he admitted making it up.
The 34-year-old man was arrested Wednesday night in Salem and charged with falsification. He was booked in the Mahoning County jail pending arraignment in Austintown's county court. Moretz said the investigation continues.
Hampson was naked when he flagged down Sgt. Pete Gorantis about 2 a.m. Nov. 10 in the 2400 block of North Newton Falls Road. The Columbiana County man provided police with what he said was biological evidence of the attack but refused to be taken to a hospital by paramedics who had been called to the scene.
His story: When questioned by police last month, Hampson said he had been gang-raped and robbed by three men he'd seen inside a Youngstown adult video store.
He said he left the video store about midnight and felt that he was being followed in a maroon vehicle by three men.
He provided police with descriptions of the men. Hampson said he ran out of gas in the 2400 block of North Newton Falls Road and the three men offered him a ride to get gas.
A gunman in the car robbed him of $350, he told police.
Hampson said he was ordered to take his clothes off and the clothes were thrown along the road.
He alleged that suspects took turns sodomizing him in the back seat of their vehicle while driving around the township, according to reports.
He told police he was let go on Newton Falls Road just north of Creed Road and had no luck waking sleeping residents for help, so he walked back toward his car.
