Victim has heart attack
WARREN -- A 50-year-old Michelle S.W. man had a heart attack after telling police that someone broke into his home and attacked him. The man told police someone entered his home around 7 a.m. Tuesday, attacked him with a cane and then bit him twice on the right arm. After attacking the victim, the man fled. The victim notified police and was being transported to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital when he had a heart attack, reports state.
Flask bankruptcy case
YOUNGSTOWN -- At the request of his attorney, a bankruptcy hearing for Edward A. Flask was postponed Tuesday. The hearing was rescheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 18. Flask, of Poland, filed for bankruptcy Oct. 19, three days before a civil case filed by the Ohio Attorney General's Office seeking $2.4 million from him was set to begin. The attorney general plans to raise objections to Flask's bankruptcy filing because the former board director of the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District listed the $2.4 million lawsuit as the main liability on his bankruptcy filing.
Underage liquor sales
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Liquor Control Commission, which had hearings in September, has announced that four liquor permit holders in the city have been penalized for underage liquor sales. They are Countryside Drive Thru at 888 N. Meridian Road, two-day suspension and $200 fine; Lil Shopper at 1143 Canfield-Niles Road, eight-day suspension and $800 fine; Brew Thru West at 6300 Mahoning Ave., five-day suspension and $500 fine; and Joenub Inc. (Smokey Joe's) at 2722 Market St., five-day suspension.
Sidewalk office hours
WARREN -- City Councilman John Homlitas, D-3rd, is having sidewalk office hours at 9 a.m. Saturday on the corner of Montclair N.E. and Garfield Drive N.E. He has been holding the informal meetings for four years and says the setting allows for positive exchange of ideas. Homlitas said he wants to know what residents think about congressional redistricting.
Trumbull MRDD forum
NILES -- The Trumbull County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities will conduct its annual public forum at 6 p.m. Dec. 12 at Fairhaven School, 420 Lincoln Way. The board seeks public input into its plan for 2002.
Flu shots in Niles
NILES -- Flu shots will be given by the city health department from 9 a.m. to noon weekdays at the department's office in city hall. The flu vaccine will be given to people of all ages; no appointments will be taken. People should bring Medicare cards. For people on Anthem Senior Advantage, Medicare HMO or other programs, the cost will be $5.
Sentenced in rape
WARREN -- A 40-year-old Niles man who pleaded guilty to a count of rape has been sentenced to five years in prison. Judge Andrew Logan sentenced Dennis Jackson of Clinton Street, Niles, during a brief hearing Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Jackson pleaded guilty to the rape charge in October. Sarah Kovoor, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor, said that on Aug. 9, Jackson had sexual contact with a 9-year-old girl whom he knew.
Doctor faces allegations
WARREN -- A city woman has filed a lawsuit against an orthopedic surgeon, contending that the doctor tried to kiss her instead of giving her a shot.
Janice Johnson, of Dunstan Drive, filed the suit against Dr. David M. Baroff, Highland Terrace Road, Niles, on Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
The suit has been assigned to Judge Andrew Logan.
Johnson is seeking more than $25,000.
Dr. Baroff could not be reached, but his lawyer, Charles Dunlap, said his client denies the allegations.
According to the suit, Johnson says that on April 2, she went to Dr. Baroff's office for treatment of an injured right arm. She said the doctor told her he would give her two shots in her shoulder to reduce the pain, the suit states. The doctor then attempted to kiss Johnson, the suit alleges.
The suit further notes that Johnson resisted Dr. Baroff and left before receiving the shots.
