SHARON, Pa. -- It's taken about two years but it looks as though the Sharon City School Board will finally implement a tougher academic standards policy.
Originally referred to as a "No F" policy that would bar pupils failing in any class from participating in any interscholastic sport or nongraded extracurricular activity, the proposal underwent a variety of revisions before an acceptable compromise was reached.
The school board had first reading on the latest version Tuesday and is expected to take a final vote in January.
The plan follows the basic Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association academic standards that require a pupil only be passing four credits to remain eligible for sports.
All Sharon pupils in grades seven through 12 will be held to that standard plus they must maintain passing grades in the core curriculum subjects of English, math, science and social studies.
Anyone failing to meet those standards will be required to attend tutoring sessions to maintain their eligibility for sports and such extracurricular activities as school plays and clubs.
Failure to attend tutoring sessions would result in forfeiture of eligibility.
Further, if the pupil is still failing after five weeks of tutoring, ineligibility would apply on a weekly basis until a passing grade is achieved.
