HERMITAGE Victims of robbery try will face drug charges

Police found 40 marijuana plants growing in the basement.
HERMITAGE, Pa. --Police arrested a Cohassett Drive couple whose home was invaded by two men, one carrying a rifle.
It turns out the couple, Ronald A. Guthrie, 36, and his wife, Brenda L. Guthrie, 39, were growing marijuana in the basement of their home, police said.
The Guthries were arrested and arraigned Tuesday morning on charges of manufacture of and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal conspiracy and corruption of a minor. Police said a 14-year-old was staying in their home.
District Justice Henry Russo freed them on their own recognizance pending a preliminary hearing.
What happened: Police were called to the house at 155 Cohassett Drive shortly after noon last Wednesday when Brenda Guthrie said two men in their early 20s, one of them carrying a rifle, kicked in her door.
The man with the gun shot and wounded one of her two German shepherd dogs when the animals wouldn't stop barking, she told police.
She said she escaped when the men told her to put her dogs outside.
The gunmen fled and police investigating the scene saw drug paraphernalia and other evidence of marijuana use in plain view in the home, said Police Chief Ed Stanton.
Police got a search warrant and went back to the house later that day and found 40 marijuana plants in various stages of growth in the basement, he said.
There were also some harvested plants that were drying near the furnace, he said.
The two would-be robbers are still at large, Stanton said.
