Boys charged with hurling bricks at cars on West Side

YOUNGSTOWN -- Two teen-age boys suspected of hurling bricks and fireworks at Oakwood Avenue motorists from the top of the long-closed Washington school on Lakewood Avenue were found hiding inside the building just past midnight Sunday and arrested.
The boys -- 17 and 15 -- were found with the aid of Rico, a police dog, and four firefighters who brought along a thermal imaging camera. Rico ran down a third-floor hallway and alerted police to a ladder leading to the roof.
Felony charges: The boys were then located with the camera, hiding in a cubbyhole. The boys, who live close by on North Osborne and South Portland avenues, were taken to the juvenile justice center pending felonious-assault charges.
Each had a lighter in his pants. Four felonious-assault reports had been logged before their apprehension, including one from a Liberty woman whose windshield exploded from something that hit it as she drove past the school about 7 p.m. Sunday.
