Tremor relief
YOUNGSTOWN -- Drs. Ali R. Rezai and Erwin B. Research award
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland State University was among 10 Ohio institutions to received the American Cancer Society's 2001 Heroes of Hope Award for cancer research. The award recognizes the contributions of ACS research grantees and grantee institutions. CSU has one ACS research grantee, Dr. Aimin Zhou, who is studying factors that may improve the efficiency of bone marrow transplant in chemotherapy patients.
Cells identified
PITTSBURGH -- University of Pittsburgh researchers have identified the precursors of epidermal Langerhans cells that reside in the skin and play a key role in the initiation and regulation of the immune response throughout the body. Researchers may now be able to use these cells to manipulate and control the immune response, according to the study published in the December issue of Nature Immunology.
Miscarriage cause?
PITTSBURGH -- A genetic flaw located in the X chromosome appears to be a key component of recurrent miscarriage among some women, according to a study published in the September issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Physicians and scientists at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Health Sciences and Magee-Womens Research Institute found that an abnormality in one of the mother's two X chromosomes may be at work in causing repeated pregnancy loss.
Osteoporosis work
CLEVELAND -- An international consortium of 62 clinicians and scientists, led by Dr. Matthew L. Warman, associated professor of genetics and pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and The Research Institute at University Hospitals of Cleveland, has identified a gene that controls bone density and could have implications for the prevention of osteoporosis. The discovery was reported in the Nov. 16 issue of Cell. Researchers found the gene while studying 28 families affected by the inherited disorder osteoporosis-pseudoglioma syndrome.
Safe for asthmatics
NEW YORK -- Flu vaccines are safe for children and adults with asthma, according to a study funded by the American Lung Association published in the Nov. 22 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. The study shows for the first time that flu vaccine is safe regardless of the severity of asthma, said Dr. Mario Castro, principal investigator for the Washington University/St. Louis American Lung Association Asthma Clinical Research Center.
Flu shot advisory
COLUMBUS -- AARP reported that the Centers for Disease Control has changed its recommendations and is now advising all 50-year-olds, no matter how healthy, to get flu shots. It takes about two weeks after the shot to develop immunity. The vaccine is made from dead viruses and will not give people who get shots the flu, according to CDC.
