YOUNGSTOWN -- Roberta Wilcox is Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority's most senior citizen.
The Norton Manor resident since 1992, who recently turned 99 years old, was honored Friday as YMHA's eldest resident.
The mother of five children, she was married to her husband, Joe, for 50 years. She is a big baseball fan and enjoys her time with her 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Jury awards damagesto man hurt at Lafarge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A jury in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court awarded Edward Wilhelm of Youngstown $350,000 in damages Friday from the Lafarge Corp. Wilhelm was injured in July 1997 at the Lafarge slag plant on Salt Springs Road. He was a customer at the plant when a front-end loader struck his pickup truck. Wilhelm was standing in front of the truck, looking under the hood, and was hurt in the collision, said Atty. John Pfau. The trial was in the courtroom of Judge Jack Durkin.
Inducing-panic chargegoes to grand jury
WARREN -- A Trumbull County grand jury will decide whether Milton Dixon should be indicted on a felony charge of inducing panic, Municipal Judge Terry Ivanchak ruled Friday. Howland police arrested Dixon, 29, of Kenwood Drive S.W., Warren on Sept. 11, the day they say he went to Trumbull Business College, 3200 Ridge Road S.E., Howland, and threatened to "shoot up the place." Dixon was not a student at the school.
Sewer extension projectgets funds from state
WARREN -- The Ohio Department of Commerce has awarded Trumbull County and Warren $564,000 to construct sewer extensions through the Golden Triangle area of Howland Township, officials announced Friday.
Prayer vigil plannedfor LTV hearing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Various members of religious organizations across Ohio have scheduled a 24-hour Prayer Vigil for Justice beginning at 3 p.m. Monday in front of the Federal Courthouse at Market Street and Front Street. Organizers said the vigil is a spiritual preparation for a bankruptcy hearing for LTV Steel Co. scheduled Tuesday in the court.
Holiday arts, bake saleset at McDonough
YOUNGSTOWN -- A holiday arts, crafts and bake sale has been scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at the Youngstown State University McDonough Museum, to raise money for the university's Student Art Association. The free event is open to the public and features ceramics, jewelry, paintings, sculpture, pillows, scarves and more.
Man admits filingfalse loan application
PITTSBURGH -- A 54-year-old Greenville, Pa., man has pleaded guilty in federal court to submitting a false loan application to a federally insured financial institution. Between October 1999 and March 2000, John J. Lockovich, of Lancaster Street, submitted loan applications to Laurel Bank and Diamond Credit Union using a false Social Security number and falsely claiming he had never filed for bankruptcy, the U.S. attorney said. Lockovich will be sentenced at 11:30 a.m. March 7.
Grove City professorhonored for teaching
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Gary Smith, a social sciences professor at Grove City College, was recently named Pennsylvania professor of the year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The award is given in recognition of extraordinary undergraduate college teaching. Last year, Smith was named professor of the year at Grove City College.
Woman charged withfracturing child's skull
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- An Erie woman has been charged with fracturing the skull of her 13-month-old daughter and failing to seek medical help for days, police said.
Jean Durst, 21, said she "lost it" because her daughter would not stop crying, police said. Durst was ordered held in the Erie County Prison on two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count each of aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person.
