ROUNDUP Canfield opens with big triumph



East Liverpool was the Cardinals' victim in the Midland Tip-Off Battle of the Border.
MIDLAND, Pa. -- Chad Baker collected 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead Canfield past East Liverpool 60-41 Friday in the opening round of the Midland Tip-Off Battle of the Borders boys basketball tournament.
Jared Kirkpatrick added 12 points and nine assists for the Cardinals.
Uniontown (Pa.) defeated Erie Cathedral Prep in the other semifinal match and will take on Canfield tonight at 8 in the championship game.
Canfield jumped out to a 17-2 lead after eight minutes and never trailed.
Bret Green and Josh Reed had 15 points for the Potters.
Fitch 51, Riverside 40: PAINESVILLE -- The Falcons, behind 30-25 at halftime, played stingy defense the rest of the game limiting Riverside to just 10 more points.
The Falcons spoiled the Beavers' bid for a first win in their new fieldhouse.
Greg Mayes sparked the Falcons with 22 points and he grabbed 16 rebounds. Kevin Johnson chipped in with 12.
Riverside was led by Adam Kolesar who tallied 11 points. Ken Proctor pulled down eight rebounds.
Southern 66, Lowellville 30: LOWELLVILLE -- Southern put three players in double figures and took advantage of Lowellville's cold shooting.
Jay Staley scored 12 points, Josh Diaz had 11 and Justin Shilot 10 as Southern (1-0) outscored Lowellville 44-14 in the second half.
Don Packner scored nine points to lead the Rockets (0-1), who made just 12-of-76 shots from the field for 16 percent.
Jackson-Milton 74, Columbiana 53: NORTH JACKSON -- Five players scored in double figures as the Bluejays easily defeated Columbiana.
Josh Ayres led the Bluejays with 13 points, while Keith McVey, Zach Nicholas and Dan Hallas each netted 12. Tim Shaw scored 11.
The Bluejays' press created 26 steals.
Gerard Grimm led the Clippers with 12 points.
Newton Falls 53, Warren JFK 48: WARREN -- Junior guard Jeff Stanley had 11 of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter to keep Warren JFK in the lead.
Newton Falls out-rebounded the Eagles, 30-26, with senior forward Marty Hutchinson and senior forward Eric Lance grabbing six apiece.
Keith Black had 14 points while Colin Clemente added 10 points for Warren JFK.
Brookfield 65, Pymatuning Valley 54: ANDOVER -- Ted Swogger scored 19 points and Julian Hayes added 17 as Brookfield defeated Pymatuning Valley. Scott Stofan added 10 points for the Warriors (1-0).
Pymatuning Valley (0-1) was paced by Jim Edison's 22 points and 10 each by Gordie Drnek and Josh Pal.
United 61, West Branch 46: HANOVERTON -- Devan Peters scored 19 points and Jason Sidwell added 14 as United defeated West Branch.
The Eagles sealed the victory by outscoring West Branch 16-8 in the fourth quarter.
The Warriors (0-1) were led by Mike Ingledue's 12 points and Josh Scott's 10. Peters grabbed 10 rebounds for United (1-0).
Beaver Local 78, Crestview 55: COLUMBIANA -- After a close first half, Beaver Local broke away with a 23-13 spurt in the third quarter.
Tim Pancake sparked the Beavers with 21 points. Daniel Higgins added 12.
Joe Sapp led the Rebels (0-1) with 14 points and he grabbed eight of his teams 19 rebounds. Troy Duwe added 13 points.
