UNITY -- Amusement rides, a sports memorabilia auction and firefighters in a tug of war are among the events planned Tuesday through Saturday at the Unity Fire Department, just off state Route 14.
Friday's events feature a parade of firetrucks at 6 p.m. and judging at 7 p.m. A tug of war between firefighters will be at 8 p.m. Men's and women's teams can have from two to seven people.
Firetrucks will be judged on newest truck, farthest distance traveled, oldest truck in service, best- appearing engine, tanker and grass firetruck. Trophies will be awarded in each category.
There will be drawings for some $25,000 in cash and prizes, a baby contest, talent contest and spaghetti-eating contest. There also will be a sports memorabilia auction with many autographed items from area teams.
A variety of food and entertainment will be available throughout the week, with concerts by country artist Misty Andersen on Friday and Saturday.
Warner Road closing
VIENNA -- Warner Road, on the Brookfield-Vienna township line between state Route 82 and Warren-Sharon Road, will be closed Monday for bridge and road work.
The road is scheduled to reopen Nov. 5.
The Trumbull County Engineer's Office recommends that motorists detour on state Route 82, Sodom Hutchings Road, Warren-Sharon Road and Warner Road.
Newton Falls detour
NEWTON FALLS -- Hallock-Young Road will be closed 0.4 mile west of Lyntz Townline Road on Tuesday and Wednesday while a pipe is replaced. Motorists should detour on Lyntz Townline Road, Pritchard Ohltown Road, Hallock Sook Road and Hallock-Young Road.
Author to speak
NILES -- Author Daniel A. Coleman will speak at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at the McKinley Memorial Library about his latest book on the life of the man who shot and killed President McKinley. McKinley was born in 1843 in Niles.
Coleman's latest book, "The Anarchist," will be released Sept. 6, the 100th anniversary of McKinley's assassination. It covers the life of Leon Czolgosz, McKinley's assassin, and the anarchism philosophy.
