HERMITAGE, PA. Buhl Day festivities to honor the past

The day's events begin at 9:30 a.m. with a parade from Hermitage Towne Plaza to the park.

HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Labor Day is Buhl Day in the Shenango Valley and thousands of area residents will travel to Buhl Farm to pay tribute to the late Frank and Julia Buhl and honor three local residents for their contributions to the Valley.
The Buhls, he an industrialist and both philanthropists, gave the park to the public to provide a place for working men, women and their families to enjoy some open recreational space.
Buhl Day features a cornucopia of ethnic foods and a wide variety of events for visitors of all ages.
It also gives the community an opportunity to honor others still living who have made significant contributions to the community. This year, the selection committee has picked businessman James E. Winner Jr. of Clark, retired teacher Fred Boles of Hermitage and Patricia Woodings of Hermitage, Mercer County League of Women Voters charter member, as the recipients of that honor.
Parade honors: They will ride in a place of honor in the parade at 9:30 a.m. that will run from Hermitage Towne Plaza on East State Street to Buhl Farm. The recipients will then be introduced at the Performing Arts Center to kick off the entertainment portion of the day.
The celebration will actually begin two days earlier on Sept. 1 with the 16th annual Junior Tennis Tournament in the park, a 45 & amp; Over Golf Tournament for men and women at the Buhland Golf Course and the annual Fishing Derby at Lake Julia in the park.
There also will be a reception at the park's Activities Building at 6 p.m. that day sponsored by the Valley Arts Guild and Buhl Day Committee.
There will be gyro sandwiches, kolbasi and kraut sandwiches, cabbage with noodles, halushki, bratwurst and a variety of standard fair food to satisfy the crowd. Children's activities will center around the Casino with balloon sculptures and magic shows from 1 to 5 p.m.
The day's activities end with an 8:40 p.m. fireworks display on the Kite Field.
Memorial: There will be a 9 a.m. F.H. Buhl Memorial Service in Oakwood Cemetery and the annual Buhl Club/Sharon American Legion 5K Run will start at 9:25 p.m. and follow the parade route.
The Shenango Valley Shuttle Service will be providing free bus service from five senior citizen apartment complexes in Sharon, Farrell, Wheatland and Sharpsville to and from the park.
