Moving up: After catcher-designated hitter Josh Bard went 0-for-2 with two walks, he met briefly with Scrappers manager Dave Turgeon and left the team. Bard, who was rehabbing an injured knee at Mahoning Valley, is on his way to Double-A Akron. "He had a very positive influence, on not just my catchers but all the players," Turgeon said. "He's very professional. He's a good person, a solid guy." In 12 games with the Scrappers, Bard batted .262 (11-for-42) with two home runs and eight RBIs.
New face: Left-handed relief pitcher Jason MacIntosh made his second appearance for the Scrappers, allowing one run on five hits in three innings. He was recently added to the roster after signing as a free agent. "He did a nice job," Turgeon said. "He might have run out of gas there; he hasn't thrown in a long time. He threw strikes, a nice changeup. He kept them off-balance."
Close play: Turgeon argued with base umpire Bill Coble after the final out. Coble called pinch hitter Rickie Morton out following a close play at first on a throw by Brooklyn shortstop Joel Zaragosa. "With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, we thought we still had a chance," Turgeon said. "We might still be playing if they call [Morton] safe at first, which he was."
YSU gets involved: Members of the Youngstown State University volleyball team were guests of the Scrappers. Senior Rebecca Sylak, a senior co-captain from Mineral Ridge, threw out the first pitch, while freshmen Lori Lyman of Conneaut Lake, Pa.; Melanie Pounders of Lorain; Debbie Koenn of Cecil; and sophomore Laura Svette of Bainbridge helped the crowd sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh-inning stretch.
