Teen-ager recovering after heart transplant
HUBBARD -- Christine Steele, 15, of Hubbard, continues to recover in the Cleveland Clinic, where she underwent a heart transplant Friday.
Christine, of 7552 Chestnut-Ridge Road, waited for four months for a new heart. She suffered from restricted cardiomyopathy, a stiffening of the heart walls.
Joni Summers, a family friend, said this morning that Christine told her Sunday that she'll spend about two more weeks in the hospital before returning home.
"She's in a lot of pain, but she looks good," Summers said. "She's been through a lot."
Community Celebration
LIBERTY -- The Liberty Township Community Celebration is Thursday at the high school football field.
June Smallwood, township parks and special projects coordinator, said activities begin at 6 p.m. with rides and games for children.
At 8 p.m., the high school marching band and cheerleaders will perform, followed by introduction of the golf, volleyball, soccer, cross country and football teams.
Fireworks by Zambelli Internationale of New Castle, Pa., will be at 9:30.
There is no admission fee. Proceeds from rides, raffles and food sales go to the school athletic booster clubs.
Man jumps to his death
RICHLAND , Pa. -- A Hubbard man jumped to his death Friday morning from a bridge on Interstate 80.
Pennsylvania State Police in Clarion said Paul Phibbs, 36, of Walnut Street, parked his car along the berm about 10:20 a.m. Friday, ran onto the bridge near Emlenton, climbed onto the retaining wall and jumped about 200 feet.
Venango County Coroner John Greggs pronounced Phibbs dead at the scene.
Injured in accident
TRANSFER, Pa. -- A Niles woman was in stable condition today in Sharon Regional Health System with injuries she suffered in a two-vehicle accident on West Lake Road in Pymatuning Township on Saturday.
Pennsylvania State Police said Penny Kaszowski, 20, of Pleasant Valley Drive, was eastbound when a westbound vehicle driven by Morgan Frazier, 18, of South Mercer Street, Greenville, slid out of control on a curve and struck her.
Three passengers in her car were treated at Sharon Regional. Frazier and two passengers went to UPMC Horizon in Greenville. Condition reports were unavailable this morning.
Stop reveals warrants
YOUNGSTOWN -- When police stopped Wade L. Shaw on Sunday afternoon on Glenwood Avenue and charged him with speeding, the officers discovered that he was driving under suspension and has three DUS convictions.
A check through the index operator turned up six warrants for the 26-year-old Hudson Avenue man's failure to appear in municipal court on previous traffic offenses.
