Arrest made in robbery
BOARDMAN -- Boardman police arrested a suspect in connection with an armed robbery that took place about 9:30 p.m. Saturday at National City Bank at the Southern Park Mall. According to police sergeant Mike Hughes, the man held up a bank customer making a deposit in the night drop box and was apprehended a short time later on Avondale Avenue, Youngstown, where an officer spotted him hiding on a porch.
Motel desk clerk in critical condition
HUBBARD -- A motel desk clerk was in critical condition after he was attacked at the Truck World Motor Inn on Saturday morning.
George Kroynovich, 63, was in St. Elizabeth Health Center after the attack just before 3 a.m., according to Hubbard Township police.
Police said Kroynovich was injured by a young man in a green shirt who may have been attempting to rob the motel. At this point, it is not clear whether any cash is missing, said Detective Mike Begeot, who would give no other details. The man made his getaway in Kroynovich's blue 1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88, which was later recovered in Liberty Township.
Family looking for dog
BOARDMAN -- A Forest Lake Drive family is looking for the dog that bit their teen Aug. 10. Debbie Bentfeld said her 16-year-old daughter was bit on both her hands and wrists by a stray black Labrador mix that approached their porch. Bentfeld said she does not want to press charges but needs to find the dog by Monday to see if her daughter needs rabies shots. The family is offering a reward. The dog had a blue collar and tags. Area residents reported seeing the animal Aug. 10 but have not seen it since. Anyone with information can call (330) 726-9659 or (330) 720-1517.
Officers assaulted
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Youngstown police officers were assaulted by onlookers after they arrested two men at the Brier Hill Italian Festival just before midnight Saturday. The police arrested one man on charges of carrying a concealed weapon. Afterward, an acquaintance of the man began taunting police and inciting the crowd to attack the officers. As the police arrested the second man, an unidentified festival-goer ran up behind one of the officers, jumped on his back and put him in a choke hold. Meanwhile, another unidentified festival-goer punched the second officer in the body. Both of the attackers then disappeared into the crowd.
Suspect arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 20-year-old woman told police that two men she recognized shot at her several times as she was driving west on Oak Street about 5 p.m. Friday. The men were traveling in a white Chrysler New Yorker. The woman was not struck by the gunfire and was able to give police the names of the shooters. One of the suspects, an 18-year-old Youngstown man, was arrested around 7 p.m. after police located his car, a white Chrysler New Yorker with a bullet hole in the windshield, parked in a driveway.
