Board hires manager
YOUNGSTOWN -- The board of directors of Youngstown Civic Center Development Corp. has hired Kimberley S. Henshaw of Wesley Avenue as its office manager at $26,000 a year to begin work Sept. 4 in the board's new office on the second floor of the city-owned Wick Building. There were 15 applicants for the job. Following the recommendation of its personnel committee, the board voted Thursday to hire Henshaw, who resides in the city and has been a staff assistant at the District XI Area Agency on Aging since March 1996. Before that, she was a sales auditor at Phar-Mor, accounting clerk at General Extrusions and customer-service trainer at Bank One. The board is overseeing development of a proposed downtown arena.
Shot after robbery
WARREN -- A 21-year-old Newark, Ohio, man told police he was shot in the hand after being robbed early today. The man, who was treated at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, said he was walking on Mahoning Avenue about 4 a.m. when two men approached him and demanded money and jewelry. When the victim attempted to get away, he was shot in the left hand, reports state. No arrests have been made.
Street fair planned
NILES -- A street fair to benefit the residents of McKinley Towers will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Seneca Street facility. The event will include a Chinese auction, homemade food, clowns and children's games. This marks the second year for the fair.
Used-book sale set
BRISTOLVILLE -- Friends of Bristol Public Library will have a used-book sale at the library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 25. Prices for books will range from 25 cents to $1.50. Donations of books for the sale will be accepted until 8 p.m. Monday. People wishing to volunteer at the sale may sign up at the library's circulation desk.
Forgery, theft charges
SHARON, Pa. -- A Farrell woman was freed on an unsecured bond following her arrest on charges of forgery and theft. Sonya K. Townsend, 33, of Market Avenue, is accused of stealing a check from a relative and then forging the victim's name on the check and cashing it at a bank in Sharon for $237 Aug. 2.
Man faces charges
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police arrested Charles N. Hunt, 19, of Meek Street, Sharon, on charges of robbery, conspiracy and simple assault in an attempted purse-snatching in the parking lot of the Shenango Valley Mall. Police said this morning that Hunt is accused of approaching a woman in the lot around 8 p.m. Tuesday and grabbing her purse. When she refused to let go, he punched her in the chest several times, police said. He fled empty-handed to a waiting car but witnesses got a description and license number for the vehicle, leading police to Hunt. He turned himself in at the police station at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and was arraigned before District Justice Henry Russo, who ordered him to be held in Mercer County Jail on $2,500 bond.
Ruling in house fire
EAST LIVERPOOL -- The fire that killed a 34-year-old rooming house tenant started accidentally, the state fire marshal's office has determined. In a ruling announced Thursday, the agency said an electrical fault near a stove started the July 17 blaze in the three-story house at 228 W. Seventh St. Daniel Sanders died in the fire. Additional details were unavailable this morning. Firefighters tried to rescue Sanders from a third-floor window, but he refused to climb onto a ladder, saying he was afraid of heights. Four other occupants survived the early-morning blaze.
'Back-to-School Blast'
BOARDMAN -- Beeghly Oaks Nursing Home will sponsor a free "Back-to-School Blast" for children 4 years old through junior high school starting at 2 p.m. Monday in the nursing home facilities off Market Street. There will be games, clowns, food, ponies and school-related prizes awarded to those who attend.
